Fittings shall be registered in accordance to the CSA B51requirements and the Provisional regulations. CSA B51 Table 1 provides the list for various categories of fittings (Cat A to Cat H).
Cat A to Cat G are quite self explanatory however cat H fitting sometimes becomes confusing to many our clients. This is also an important category where you can registration for multiple use for 10 years.
Category A : Pipe fittings, including couplings, tees, elbows, wyes, plugs, unions, pipe caps, and reducers
Category B : All flanges
Category C : All line valves
Category D : All types of expansion joints, flexible connections, and hose assemblies
Category E : Strainers, filters, separators, and steam traps
Category F : Measuring devices and indicating devices, including pressure gauges, level gauges, sight glasses, levels, and
pressure transmitters
Category G: Certified capacity-rated pressure relief devices acceptable as primary overpressure protection on boilers,
pressure vessels and pressure piping, and fusible plugs
Category H : Pressure-retaining components that do not fall into Categories A to G
Cat A to Cat G are quite self explanatory, however, Cat H fittings sometimes becomes confusing to many our clients. This is also an important category as you can registration a system for multiple uses for 10 years.
Within this category, one of the areas where it is widely used is “An assembly of components (including Piping Components), provided that the diameter of any comment does not exceed 152 mm (6 in) and the total volume of the assembly does not exceed 42.5 L (1.5 cu ft). Such an assembly is considered a single category H fitting for the purpose of fitting registration.
Determining if your design fits in this category need interpretations of the code requirements.
Important points to consider when submitting a request to a regulator.
For regulators, the focus of the design registration review is to verify that the Fitting design complies with the requirements of the Act and Regulations. For new Fitting designs, the design shall be documented and submitted on drawings, specifications, brochures, catalogues and other information that describes the design.
The submitted documents must be as detailed as construction drawings issued to the manufacturing floor. This detail must be self explanatory such that no additional information is required from the designer or submitter and that it meets the Act and Regulations as well as the Code of Construction or Standard. In short, the drawings must be complete enough that, without having to assume anything, one could use the submitted drawings and specifications to build the exact same item and have it meet the Code. The design documents shall show, but are not limited to:
